The ALDI brand is an unrivalled hallmark for the success of the discounter concept. Our story begins in the Schonnebeck neighbourhood of the German city of Essen. Over the decades, a small grocery store grew into the ALDI Nord Group which is now present in nine European countries with almost 70 legally independent regional companies.
However, the union between the brothers did not last. A dispute in 1961 on whether Aldi should sell cigarettes or not led to the brothers splitting the business into two: Aldi Nord (North Germany) and Aldi Sud (South Germany). Funnily enough, the area that divides the Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud regions in Germany is known as the ‘Aldi Equator.’.
Aldi has now set a long-term target of operating 1,500 U.K. stores, up from a target of 1,200 previously and it opened its 1,000th store in Woking in the South-East England earlier this month.
The connection between Trader Joe's and Aldi stems from a separation of Aldi into Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd (Aldi North and Aldi South) in the 1960s. In 1971, as Mark Gardiner, author of Build a Brand Like Trader Joe's, explains, Theo Albrecht, the owner of Aldi Nord, bought Trader Joe's. The Aldis seen in the US today belong to Aldi Süd.

The first place outside Germany Aldi Süd expanded to was Austria. That happened in 1967, when Aldi Süd bought the Austrian grocery chain Hofer. At that time, it was decided to keep the name as Hofer due to that store’s brand recognition in Austria being so high. It has remained that way to this day.
